Marienlyst Strandhotel: a seaside spa escape in Helsingør

Marienlyst Strandhotel: a seaside spa escape in Helsingør S:KØN SKINCARE

Marienlyst Strandhotel: SKØN JOURNAL / TRAVEL

There is a particular pleasure in arriving by the sea with very little you need to accomplish. A walk, perhaps. Something good for dinner. An appointment where, for once, someone else takes care of you.

At Marienlyst Strandhotel in Helsingør, on Denmark’s North Zealand coast, those small ambitions can comfortably fill a weekend.

In this SKØN Journal series, we explore destinations where our skincare becomes part of the experience. Marienlyst holds a special place in that story. Through our longstanding collaboration, you can discover SKØN in selected spa treatments and in the hotel shop, bringing together professional care and the pleasure of continuing a little of it at home.

Here, our guide begins beside the Øresund, with warm water, a treatment worth making time for and a historic coastal town to explore.

A Danish seaside tradition with life in it

Marienlyst has welcomed guests since 1861. Its history belongs to a time when a stay by the coast was an occasion in itself, attracting royalty and visitors drawn to summer life beside the Øresund.

Today, the attraction is easy to understand. There is the beach, the changing water and the prospect of spending an afternoon somewhere between a bathrobe and a dinner reservation.

But Marienlyst also has a sociable side. Come with your partner, bring a friend or arrange the kind of gathering that deserves more than a hurried lunch. We would leave space for both conversation and time alone with the view.

The best seaside weekends have room for a little of each.

Make the view part of the stay

Before booking, think about how you would like to spend the hours in your room.

If watching the water is part of the appeal, choose a category that specifically includes a sea view. If you picture a long bath or a leisurely morning indoors, look closely at the facilities of the individual room rather than assuming every category offers the same experience.

Marienlyst’s rooms and suites range from intimate rooms to more spacious options, with different outlooks and layouts.

Our advice is simple: book somewhere you will enjoy being awake in. A night away feels longer when the room itself becomes part of the pleasure.

Warm pools and sea air

The Pool Club & Spa brings the shoreline into the experience, with indoor and outdoor bathing, saunas, steam facilities and places to relax overlooking the Øresund.

Outside, the infinity pool offers views towards the water and Kronborg Castle. Beachside saunas and guided sauna rituals give you another way to enjoy the contrast between warmth and fresh air. A sea dip is an option, rather than an obligation.

We would begin gently. Take a little time to find your bearings, settle into the water and resist the urge to turn relaxation into a circuit you must complete.

There is a social rhythm here, too, with lounge music, refreshments and room to enjoy each other’s company. Choose your session according to the kind of afternoon you want.

Day visits are available as well as overnight stays. Check the access included in your package and the reserved time slot when booking your Pool Club experience.

Let the therapists take the lead

For us, the most personal connection to Marienlyst lies in the treatment room.

There is something special about experiencing familiar skincare through a therapist’s hands. The pace changes. Application becomes more considered. You can simply settle in and let someone else guide the experience.

Two treatments on the hotel’s current treatment menu are particularly worth exploring.

SKØN Face

This 45-minute facial explicitly features nourishing SKØN Skincare products. Marienlyst describes a sensory approach involving sound, scent, colour and vibration alongside the facial care.

We would choose it when the face needs attention and the diary needs a pause: enough time to step out of the day, without making the entire visit revolve around an appointment.

SKØN Ritual

For a longer experience, the 90-minute ritual combines body and facial care. The description includes exfoliation, massage inspired by Polynesian techniques, warm and cool stones, and a facial with cleansing, a mask and Gua Sha.

It is the option we would explore when the treatment itself is the main reason for coming.

Discuss your skin’s needs and preferences with the team, then leave some unhurried time afterwards. View and book through Marienlyst’s spa treatment page.

From the treatment room to your own bathroom shelf

A good treatment can change how you approach the few minutes you spend on your skin each day.

Perhaps it is the gentler touch you notice, or the pleasure of allowing a cream to settle before reaching for the next thing. Those are small details, but they are easy to bring home.

At Marienlyst, you can also explore SKØN in the hotel shop. Ask the therapists which products they have used during your treatment and how they would suggest fitting them into your existing routine.

For us, that conversation is a lovely part of the experience. A product becomes more personal when you understand why it has been chosen and how to enjoy using it.

At SKØN Skincare, we give careful attention to ingredients, comforting textures and the feeling a product leaves on the skin. Discovering that care in a professional setting offers a different introduction — with time to ask questions and notice what you enjoy.

The holiday may be brief. The ritual can stay.

Stay for dinner

After the spa, give yourself time to dress slowly and enjoy the transition into the evening.

Marienlyst’s restaurants offer different ways to shape dinner. Restaurant Isabell takes a Nordic approach, with contemporary interpretations of Danish favourites and seasonal ingredients. Gemma brings an Italian direction, while Restaurant 1861 offers a more elaborate dining occasion overlooking the Øresund.

Choose according to the evening you have in mind. A relaxed meal with friends asks for something different from a dinner you have been looking forward to all week.

We would reserve ahead and check the current menus, especially if you have dietary requirements. Then leave the rest of the evening open. A good dinner rarely benefits from being followed by a timetable.

Give Helsingør a morning of its own

It would be easy to spend the entire stay at the hotel. Still, Helsingør, also known as Elsinore, deserves a little of your time.

Its historic streets and harbour make a pleasing change of pace between spa sessions. Wander through the old town, stop for coffee and browse the shops without a particular purchase in mind.

For a more substantial outing, head to Kronborg Castle, the UNESCO-listed Renaissance castle associated with Shakespeare’s Hamlet. It gives the coastline a sense of history that extends well beyond the hotel window.

We would choose one main cultural visit and leave room around it for wandering. The Helsingør Visitor Service at the Culture Yard can help with local suggestions, events and practical advice.

A seaside break can hold both a good facial and a castle. There is no need to choose.

How we would spend a weekend here

Arrive with enough time to settle in before your first reservation. Take a walk along the water, find somewhere comfortable for a drink and let dinner mark the beginning of the stay.

On your full day, give the spa and your chosen treatment proper space. Arrange the order with the team, allowing time between bathing, treatment and dinner rather than placing everything back to back.

Before leaving, spend a little time in Helsingør or return to the shop to choose the skincare you enjoyed during your treatment.

Two nights would be our choice for a weekend with room to breathe. A single night or a day visit can still offer a welcome change of scene if that is what your calendar allows.

Planning your seaside escape

Marienlyst Strandhotel is located at Nordre Strandvej 2 in Helsingør, North Zealand, Denmark.

For a visit from Copenhagen, you can travel by train to Helsingør and arrange the final part of the journey to the hotel. Consult Marienlyst’s contact information for help with arrival and parking, and check current transport connections before setting off.

Book your treatment as well as your stay if there is a particular experience you want. Bring swimwear and something comfortable for a coastal walk; a windproof layer can earn its place in the bag in any season.

Most of all, leave a few gaps in the plan. They tend to become the moments you remember.

A reason to return to the water

The pleasure of Marienlyst lies in how easily different parts of a break can come together: the sea outside, time in the spa, care from a therapist and dinner with someone whose company you enjoy.

For SKØN, being part of those moments through a longstanding collaboration is something we value deeply.

Come for a change of scene. Make time for the treatment. Take a little of the feeling home.
