Essential Oils

Essential Oils for Diffusers, Sauna and Everyday Aromatherapy

Essential oils offer a simple way to bring botanical fragrance into everyday rituals. A few carefully measured drops can change the atmosphere of a room, add a sensory dimension to a sauna ritual or become part of a personal moment of care.

At SKØN SKINCARE, our essential oil collection includes three distinctive blends: Celebration, Boost and Heaven. Each blend combines aromatic botanical oils to create its own fragrance profile, from bright citrus and mint to deeper herbal notes and soft, spa-inspired florals.

Essential oils are highly concentrated and should always be used thoughtfully. They are not perfumes diluted and ready to apply directly to the skin. Depending on the intended use, they may need to be added to a diffuser, mixed into water for sauna use or correctly diluted in a suitable carrier oil.

What Is an Essential Oil?

An essential oil is a concentrated and volatile aromatic material obtained from botanical raw materials.

Depending on the plant, an essential oil may be extracted from:

  • Flowers
  • Leaves
  • Herbs
  • Fruit peel
  • Seeds
  • Bark
  • Wood
  • Roots
  • Resin

Examples include lavender oil from lavender flowers, peppermint oil from peppermint leaves, grapefruit oil from the fruit peel and patchouli oil from patchouli leaves.

Essential oils are normally obtained through methods such as steam distillation or mechanical extraction. Citrus oils are often extracted from the peel.

The term “essential” refers to the characteristic aromatic essence of the plant. It does not mean that the oil is nutritionally essential.

Why Do Essential Oils Evaporate?

Essential oils contain volatile aromatic molecules.

These molecules gradually move from the oil into the surrounding air, where they can be detected by the olfactory receptors in the nose. This is how we experience fragrance.

Lighter aromatic molecules tend to evaporate more quickly, while heavier molecules remain noticeable for longer. This is why an essential oil blend may change as you experience it.

Fragrance compositions are often described through:

Top notes

The first aromas you notice. Citrus and peppermint commonly create an immediate, fresh impression.

Middle notes

The heart of the fragrance. Floral and herbal materials often shape the main character of the blend.

Base notes

The slower and deeper notes that remain after the lighter aromas begin to fade. Patchouli, woods and resins often provide depth and longevity.

Temperature, ventilation, room size and the amount used all influence how strongly and how long an essential oil can be experienced.

Essential Oils, Memory and Sensory Rituals

Our sense of smell is closely connected to memory and recognition.

A fragrance may remind you of a garden, a holiday, a familiar person, a sauna experience or a hotel spa. Sometimes the association appears before you consciously identify the scent.

Repeated use of a particular aroma may also become connected to a familiar ritual. You may begin to associate one blend with preparing for the day, another with sauna and another with a quiet evening at home.

These are personal sensory associations rather than guaranteed effects.

An essential oil should not be presented as a treatment for stress, sleep problems, anxiety or medical conditions. Fragrance experiences vary between individuals and are influenced by memory, culture and personal preference.

What Is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils and aromatic botanical materials as part of sensory, personal-care and wellness rituals.

In everyday life, aromatherapy may include the use of essential oils in:

  • Diffusers
  • Aroma lamps
  • Sauna and saunagus
  • Massage rituals
  • Baths and foot baths
  • Yoga or meditation spaces
  • Personal home-spa rituals

At SKØN SKINCARE, aromatherapy refers to the sensory experience of botanical fragrance and the atmosphere it can help create.

We describe a blend by its fragrance character—such as fresh, herbal, floral, warm or spa-inspired—rather than making medical promises about how it will affect the body or mind.

What Is the Difference Between an Essential Oil and an Aroma Oil?

An essential oil is obtained from botanical raw materials through recognised extraction methods.

An aroma oil is a broader commercial term. Depending on the product, it may contain:

  • Essential oils
  • Natural aromatic extracts
  • Synthetic fragrance materials
  • Carrier oils
  • A combination of natural and synthetic fragrance ingredients

The name “aroma oil” does not automatically mean that a product consists entirely of essential oils.

A fragrance oil or perfume may also contain natural materials, synthetic fragrance molecules or a combination of both.

Natural does not automatically mean safer, just as synthetic does not automatically mean harmful. Safety depends on the individual ingredients, their concentration and how the finished product is intended to be used.

Are Essential Oils Allergen-Free?

No.

Essential oils are natural, but they can still contain naturally occurring fragrance allergens such as:

  • Limonene
  • Linalool
  • Citral
  • Geraniol
  • Eugenol
  • Farnesol

This does not mean that everyone will react to them. It means that some individuals may experience irritation or develop an allergic reaction.

Almost everything with a noticeable scent contains volatile aromatic molecules. Botanical origin does not make a fragrant material automatically allergy-free.

Stop using the product if you experience redness, itching, burning, swelling or another unwanted reaction.

Should Essential Oils Be Diluted?

Pure essential oils should generally not be applied undiluted directly to the skin.

When an essential oil is intended for topical use, it should be diluted in a suitable cosmetic carrier oil according to the instructions for the individual product.

Carrier oils may include:

  • Jojoba oil
  • Grape-seed oil
  • Almond oil
  • Apricot-kernel oil
  • A suitable massage oil

Adding essential oil to plain water does not dilute it evenly because oil and water do not mix without a suitable dispersing system.

Always use the method and amount recommended for the specific product.

How to Use Essential Oils in a Diffuser

A diffuser is one of the easiest ways to enjoy essential oils at home.

Add the recommended number of drops according to the diffuser manufacturer’s instructions and the directions for the essential oil.

Begin with a small amount. The appropriate number of drops depends on:

  • The size of the room
  • Ventilation
  • The diffuser’s capacity
  • The intensity of the blend
  • How many people are present
  • Individual fragrance sensitivity

A subtle fragrance is often more pleasant than an overscented room.

Use essential oils in a ventilated space and take particular care around babies, children, pets and individuals who are sensitive to fragrance.

How to Use Essential Oils in Sauna and Saunagus

Essential oils can add botanical fragrance to a sauna ritual.

Never pour undiluted essential oil directly onto hot sauna stones.

Instead:

  1. Add the recommended number of drops to water.
  2. Follow the instructions for the sauna and the essential oil.
  3. Begin with a low concentration.
  4. Consider the sensitivity of everyone present.
  5. Ensure appropriate ventilation.

Heat intensifies fragrance. An amount that feels subtle at room temperature may become much stronger inside a hot sauna.

Only use essential oils suitable for sauna use.

Essential Oils for Massage

When the product is intended for topical use, an essential oil can be diluted in a suitable carrier oil for an aromatic massage ritual.

Follow the product’s dilution instructions rather than estimating the amount.

Take particular care in relation to:

  • Sensitive or irritated skin
  • Known allergies
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Medication
  • Existing health conditions
  • Frequent use
  • Sun exposure after application

Some citrus oils may require specific precautions in relation to sunlight, depending on the oil and extraction method.

Essential Oils in Baths and Foot Baths

Essential oils do not disperse evenly in plain water.

Undiluted drops may remain concentrated on the surface and come into direct contact with the skin. An essential oil intended for bathing should therefore be mixed with an appropriate bath base or dispersing product according to its directions.

The same applies to a foot bath.

Use only essential oils suitable for topical use, avoid broken or irritated skin and remember that oils can make the bath surface slippery.

Essential Oils in Laundry

When permitted by the individual product directions, a small amount of essential oil can be added to the washing machine’s fabric-softener compartment to give laundry a light botanical fragrance.

Never pour concentrated oil directly onto clothing, as it may stain or leave residue.

People with fragrance-sensitive skin may prefer unscented laundry, especially for underwear, bed linen, baby clothing and towels used on the face.

Natural fragrance can still contain allergens.

SKØN Celebration Essential Oil

Celebration is a bright and lively essential oil blend with lemon, grapefruit and peppermint.

Fragrance profile

  • Bright citrus
  • Fresh grapefruit
  • Cooling peppermint
  • Light and lively character

Celebration is well suited to morning rituals, bathrooms, entrance areas, diffusers and fresh sauna experiences.

Its lighter citrus and mint notes create an immediate aromatic impression.

SKØN Boost Essential Oil

Boost combines patchouli, rosemary and ylang-ylang in a deeper, warmer fragrance composition.

Fragrance profile

  • Deep patchouli
  • Aromatic rosemary
  • Soft ylang-ylang
  • Warm, herbal and earthy character

Boost is ideal when you prefer a richer botanical fragrance for massage rituals, sauna, autumn evenings or quiet moments at home.

Patchouli acts as a deeper note and may remain noticeable longer than lighter citrus aromas.

SKØN Heaven Essential Oil

Heaven combines lavender, grapefruit and ylang-ylang in a soft and balanced blend.

Fragrance profile

  • Soft lavender
  • Fresh grapefruit
  • Floral ylang-ylang
  • Gentle, spa-inspired character

Heaven is a natural choice for evening rituals, bathrooms, diffusers, sauna and personal home-spa moments.

Lavender is culturally associated with rest and calm, but this is a familiar fragrance association rather than a promise that the product treats stress or sleep difficulties.

Which Essential Oil Blend Should You Choose?

Choose Celebration when you prefer a bright citrus-and-mint fragrance.

Choose Boost when you prefer a deeper, herbal and warmer aroma.

Choose Heaven when you prefer a soft, floral and spa-inspired blend.

The best choice is the fragrance you enjoy and can use appropriately in your preferred ritual.

Essential Oil Safety

Essential oils are concentrated and should be handled carefully.

  • Do not ingest essential oils.
  • Do not apply them undiluted directly to the skin.
  • Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Keep away from flames and excessive heat.
  • Follow the directions for the individual product.
  • Ventilate rooms during diffusion.
  • Stop using the product if irritation occurs.
  • Use extra care around babies, pets and fragrance-sensitive individuals.
  • Never assume that natural means risk-free.

A product suitable for a diffuser is not automatically suitable for massage, bathing, sauna or laundry. Always follow the specific usage instructions.
