Value Chain & Production
At S:KØN Skincare, we view the value chain as more than a technical process. It is an interaction between people, knowledge, raw materials and decisions, where every step has significance for the finished product – and for the way it is created.
Our approach is built on professional expertise, transparency and conscious choices throughout the entire process, from raw material to finished product. Not based on fixed dogmas, but on the knowledge and possibilities available at the time a product is developed.
RAW MATERIALS - ORIGIN, QUALITY AND RESPONSIBILITY
The value chain begins with raw materials. The majority of our skincare is developed using raw materials sourced primarily from Danish suppliers, where proximity and dialogue provide better insight into origin, quality and documentation. A smaller proportion of raw materials originates from other EU countries, where suppliers comply with applicable European legislation and standards.
All raw materials, regardless of origin, must comply with the EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009, including requirements for safety assessment, documentation, traceability and responsible production.
The selection of raw materials is based on an overall assessment of function, safety, quality and responsibility – not on black-and-white distinctions.
DEVELOPMENT AND FORMULATION - FROM IDEA TO FUNCTION
Product development always begins with a specific need. Each product starts with the question:
What should this product do, and how does it best support the skin in a cosmetic context?
Formulations are developed in close collaboration with pharmacists, biochemists, manufacturers and raw material suppliers. Work is carried out systematically with ingredient interaction, skin tolerance, stability, shelf life, texture and usability.
Only ingredients that actively contribute to the overall formulation are included. Unnecessary additives are excluded, and each choice can be explained and professionally justified.
PRODUCTION - SMALL SCALE, CLOSE RESPONSIBILITY
S:KØN Skincare is produced in small batches, allowing us to work closely with the processes and maintain a high level of quality at every stage. Small-scale production provides:
- Better control
- Greater flexibility
- Opportunities for continuous adjustments
- Less waste
Production takes place under controlled conditions and in compliance with applicable cosmetic legislation, with a focus on hygiene, safety and consistency.
MAKEUP AND GLOBAL RAW MATERIALS - A CONSCIOUS CHOICE
Our makeup differs from skincare in its raw material profile. Makeup formulations largely consist of minerals and pigments, which are generally not processed or produced within the EU at the required quality and scale for cosmetic use.
To ensure quality, safety and proper handling, we have chosen to collaborate with a Danish professional company with many years of experience in cosmetic production, which holds an ownership interest in and access to production at a factory in Asia. Production follows established manufacturing standards and complies with applicable requirements for cosmetic manufacturing, with quality, safety and working conditions integrated into the collaboration.
When specific raw materials are not available locally, responsibility for us means making informed and well-considered choices within the supply chain. This involves working with partners who can document their processes and meet the requirements and standards we set for safety, quality and proper production.
COSMOS NATURAL - COMPATIBILITY RATHER THAN CERTIFICATION
All our formulations and raw material choices are developed to be compatible with the COSMOS Natural standard. This means that ingredients, processes and formulation principles follow the requirements and guidelines on which COSMOS Natural is based.
At present, we have chosen not to certify all finished products, even though the formulations comply with the standard. Certification involves significant costs and extensive administrative processes, and the schemes are managed by private organisations. We hope that the EU will, in time, establish an official framework that creates a more level playing field and is less confusing for consumers.
For us, certification costs must ultimately be absorbed somewhere within the value chain – often with the risk of compromising raw material quality or formulation. This is a trade-off we have consciously chosen to avoid.
Instead, we prioritise investing in raw material quality and documentation. For this reason, we make extensive use of COSMOS Natural and COSMOS Organic certified raw materials, or raw materials sourced from suppliers certified according to COSMOS standards. In this way, we ensure that the foundation of our products meets the same requirements, without allowing the certification process itself to define the content.
TESTING AND QUALITY ASSURANCE
Quality assurance is an integral part of the value chain. In addition to internal assessments and documentation, selected products containing active ingredients are dermatologically tested through independent external testing laboratories to assess skin tolerance and suitability.
When patented ingredients are included in formulations, this is based on documented research and development work, where the stability, use and safety of the raw materials are thoroughly described within a cosmetic context.
Testing is not viewed as a guarantee of individual results, but as an important element in the development of safe and well-documented cosmetic products.
A VALUE CHAIN IN MOTION
The value chain at S:KØN Skincare is not static. It evolves alongside new knowledge, new raw materials and new ways of working responsibly. We continuously evaluate our choices and make adjustments when it makes professional and practical sense.
For us, the value chain is a living system – where quality, responsibility and professional integrity are connected from the first idea to the finished product.
