Sensitive skin

Skincare for Sensitive and Reactive Skin

Sensitive skin does not necessarily need more products. It needs fewer unnecessary influences, better formulations and a routine that allows the skin to settle.

When the skin feels tight, stings, becomes red or suddenly reacts to products it previously tolerated, it can be tempting to introduce another active ingredient or treatment. In many cases, however, sensitive skin benefits more from calm, consistency and carefully selected care.

At SKØN SKINCARE, we approach sensitive skin with respect for its natural balance. The aim is not simply to reduce temporary discomfort, but to help the skin retain moisture, feel more supple and maintain a stronger, more resilient surface over time.

When sensitive skin feels calm and well hydrated, it often looks more beautiful too: softer, smoother, more even and naturally radiant. Not because it has been overstimulated, but because it has been given better conditions in which to function.

What is sensitive skin?

Sensitive, delicate and reactive skin are terms used to describe skin that responds more easily to skincare products, environmental changes or physical contact.

Sensitive skin may feel or appear:

  • dry, tight or uncomfortable
  • red or flushed
  • itchy, warm or irritated
  • prone to stinging or tingling
  • rough or flaky
  • reactive to skincare products
  • easily overwhelmed by active ingredients

Sensitivity is not always a permanent skin type.

For some people, it is inherited and has been present for most of their lives. For others, it develops temporarily when the skin barrier is under pressure or the skin is exposed to more than it can comfortably manage.

This means that skin can be dry and sensitive, oily and sensitive, combination and sensitive, or mature and increasingly reactive.

What causes sensitive skin?

There is no single cause of sensitive skin.

Genetics and a natural tendency towards conditions such as eczema can influence how reactive the skin is. Sensitivity may also develop when the skin barrier has been weakened or stressed.

Common triggers include:

  • cold weather, wind and rapid changes in temperature
  • sun exposure and insufficient sun protection
  • low humidity, indoor heating and air conditioning
  • over-cleansing or strongly degreasing products
  • very hot water
  • frequent exfoliation or physical scrubbing
  • several active ingredients used at the same time
  • hormonal changes
  • stress and lack of sleep
  • medication or illness
  • cosmetic or professional skin treatments
  • fragrance and other ingredients that the individual skin does not tolerate

A sudden reaction does not always mean that the skin needs another active product. Sometimes the most effective approach is to simplify the routine, remove possible irritants and give the skin time to recover its comfort.

Why is fragrance-free skincare important for sensitive skin?

Fragrance creates a pleasant scent and can add to the sensorial experience of a product. It is not, however, necessary for the skincare product to moisturise or care for the skin.

When skin is sensitive, reactive or already uncomfortable, choosing fragrance-free skincare is a simple way to reduce unnecessary exposure.

This also applies to natural fragrance.

An ingredient is not automatically gentler simply because it comes from a plant. Essential oils and naturally aromatic extracts may contain fragrance compounds that can irritate or sensitise susceptible skin.

Natural fragrance substances such as limonene and linalool occur in citrus fruits, flowers, herbs and woods. They may smell beautiful, but sensitive skin can still react to them—particularly after these substances have been exposed to air and oxidised.

This does not mean that everyone reacts to fragrance or that every fragranced product is unsuitable. But when the skin is sensitive, fragrance-free formulas provide a sensible starting point and remove one potential source of irritation from the routine.

Look for products without added parfum, fragrance or aroma. Be aware that terms such as “natural”, “clean” or “botanical” do not automatically mean that a product is fragrance-free or suitable for reactive skin.

Is natural skincare always better for sensitive skin?

Not necessarily.

Natural origin and skin tolerance are not the same thing. A natural ingredient can be mild, effective and valuable, but it can also contain components that an individual skin does not tolerate.

The quality of skincare depends on more than whether ingredients are natural or synthetic. What matters is:

  • the purpose of each ingredient
  • the concentration used
  • the quality of the raw materials
  • how the formula is stabilised
  • which ingredients are combined
  • how the complete product performs on the skin

At SKØN SKINCARE, we work with carefully selected oils, vitamins, extracts and targeted ingredients according to the role they play within the finished formulation.

For sensitive skin, simplicity should not mean an incomplete formula. It should mean precise skincare in which every ingredient has a reason to be included and the skin is not exposed to unnecessary stimulation.

How should sensitive skin be cared for?

Sensitive skin generally responds best to a gentle and consistent routine.

The purpose is to cleanse without stripping, replenish moisture and lipids, and protect the skin from influences known to trigger discomfort.

Morning routine for sensitive skin

  1. Rinse with lukewarm water or use a mild facial cleanser when needed.
  2. Apply a simple serum or facial oil already tolerated by the skin.
  3. Follow with a fragrance-free moisturiser.
  4. Finish with suitable sun protection.

Very dry or reactive skin may not need a full cleanse every morning. A light rinse can sometimes be sufficient, depending on the skin and the products used overnight.

Evening routine for sensitive skin

  1. Remove makeup, sunscreen and daily buildup with a mild cleanser or cleansing oil.
  2. Avoid aggressive rubbing, cleansing brushes and very hot water.
  3. Apply serum or facial oil only when the skin needs and tolerates it.
  4. Finish with a nourishing, fragrance-free night cream.

When the skin is actively reacting, pause exfoliation, scrubs, strong acids, retinoids and other intensive treatments until it feels calm again.

Which face cream is best for sensitive skin?

A good face cream for sensitive skin should first and foremost feel comfortable.

It should not repeatedly sting, burn or leave the skin feeling tight. It should provide enough moisture and nourishment to keep the skin soft and comfortable without overwhelming it.

Look for a moisturiser that:

  • is fragrance-free
  • provides moisture and nourishing lipids
  • suits the skin’s current level of dryness
  • supports a simple, consistent routine
  • is developed with dry or sensitive skin in mind
  • leaves the skin feeling soft rather than coated or congested

Dry and sensitive skin will often benefit from a richer texture. Combination or oily skin that is also sensitive may need a smaller amount or a lighter application.

The most important distinction is not whether a product is described as light or rich. It is how the skin feels several hours after application.

Repair Microbiome for dry and sensitive skin

SKØN SKINCARE’s Repair Microbiome Day Cream and Repair Microbiome Night Cream are fragrance-free moisturisers developed for skin that needs moisture, comfort and carefully considered support.

The formulas combine selected oils, vitamins and targeted ingredients with a focus on suppleness, moisture balance and the skin microbiome.

The Repair Microbiome range may be particularly relevant for:

  • dry or dehydrated skin
  • sensitive or reactive skin
  • mature skin
  • skin that feels tight after cleansing
  • skin affected by cold, wind or indoor heating
  • temporarily stressed or uncomfortable skin
  • anyone seeking fragrance-free facial care

The philosophy behind Repair Microbiome is not to challenge sensitive skin with as many active ingredients as possible. It is to provide concentrated, well-balanced care that helps the skin feel softer, calmer and more comfortable.

Use Repair Microbiome Day Cream in the morning after cleansing and any serum or facial oil. Apply Repair Microbiome Night Cream as the final step in the evening when the skin needs richer overnight nourishment.

The products are concentrated and designed to be used sparingly. Begin with a small amount and add more only where the skin needs it.

Does sensitive skin need both serum and cream?

Not always.

When the skin is irritated or unusually reactive, a mild cleanser and fragrance-free moisturiser may be enough. A simple routine makes it easier to identify what the skin tolerates and reduces the risk of unnecessary overload.

When the skin feels stable, a serum can add more targeted care.

Serums and creams perform different functions. A serum typically has a lighter texture and can deliver selected ingredients in a targeted formula. A cream provides moisture, lipids and a final layer of comfort that helps reduce moisture loss.

Some ingredients work best in water-based serums, while others require oil or a cream emulsion. For this reason, a carefully selected serum and moisturiser can provide a more precise routine than trying to include every function in one product.

Introduce additional steps gradually and only when there is a clear reason.

Is facial oil suitable for sensitive skin?

Facial oil can be useful when sensitivity is connected to dryness, reduced suppleness or a lack of natural lipids.

Oil does not hydrate the skin with water. Instead, it softens the surface and can help reduce moisture loss. It may be used beneath moisturiser, mixed with the cream or pressed gently over particularly dry areas.

Choose an oil without added fragrance and begin with one or two drops.

Facial oil is not necessary for everyone. If the skin already feels comfortable with serum and cream, there may be no need to add another step.

When the skin is hot, very itchy, swollen or visibly inflamed, avoid repeatedly testing new cosmetic products. The underlying cause should first be considered.

Should sensitive skin be exfoliated?

Sensitive skin can sometimes benefit from gentle exfoliation, but exfoliation is not essential for healthy skin.

When the skin is red, stinging, flaky because of irritation or feels damaged, exfoliation should be paused.

Once the skin feels balanced, occasional exfoliation may help remove dead skin cells and give the surface a smoother, fresher appearance. The frequency should be adapted to the individual skin, and sensitive skin will often need longer intervals between treatments.

Avoid combining several acids, peeling products and scrubs in the same routine. More exfoliation does not create stronger skin. Excessive exfoliation can weaken the skin barrier and increase sensitivity.

Can sensitive skin use anti-age skincare?

Yes. Sensitive skin can also be mature skin, and it does not have to choose between gentle care and effective skincare.

For reactive skin, age-supporting skincare should begin with the fundamentals:

  • consistent moisture
  • nourishing lipids
  • skin comfort
  • protection of the skin barrier
  • daily sun protection
  • carefully introduced targeted ingredients

When the skin is dehydrated or persistently irritated, it can appear duller, rougher and less even. Fine dehydration lines may also become more visible.

Helping the skin regain moisture and comfort can therefore make it look smoother, softer and more radiant before more intensive active products are considered.

Introduce age-supporting products one at a time and reduce the frequency if the skin becomes uncomfortable.

What should you avoid with sensitive skin?

Skin tolerance is individual, but it can be helpful to limit:

  • added fragrance
  • fragranced essential oils
  • very hot water
  • harsh cleansing products
  • frequent physical scrubbing
  • excessive use of acids and exfoliants
  • several new products introduced simultaneously
  • unnecessary rubbing from cloths or brushes
  • products that repeatedly sting or burn
  • constant changes to the skincare routine

Do not assume that a product is suitable for sensitive skin simply because it is described as natural, clean or hypoallergenic.

Read the ingredient list, introduce products gradually and observe how the skin responds over time.

How should new skincare products be introduced?

Sensitive skin benefits from patience.

Introduce one new product at a time and use it consistently before adding another. Applying a small amount to a limited area first can make it easier to observe how the skin reacts, although it cannot guarantee that a later reaction will not occur.

Avoid changing the cleanser, serum, oil and cream simultaneously. When several products are introduced at once, it becomes difficult to identify what is helping or causing discomfort.

A calm, carefully built routine is often more valuable than a shelf full of products the skin does not need.

What can make sensitive skin worse?

Sensitive skin may become more reactive when several smaller pressures occur at the same time.

Cold weather, indoor heating, lack of sleep, stress, travel, active skincare and frequent cleansing may each be manageable separately. Together, however, they can leave the skin feeling dry, tight or unusually reactive.

When this happens, reduce the routine to the essentials:

  1. Gentle cleansing
  2. Fragrance-free moisturiser
  3. Sun protection during the day

Once the skin feels comfortable again, other products can be reintroduced one at a time.

When should you seek professional advice?

Cosmetic skincare can moisturise, soften and protect the skin, but it is not intended to diagnose or treat skin disease.

Consult a doctor, pharmacist or dermatologist if the skin:

  • remains red, itchy or swollen
  • develops blisters, cracks or weeping areas
  • feels painful or burns intensely
  • reacts repeatedly to many different products
  • changes suddenly or significantly
  • does not improve after simplifying the routine
  • shows possible signs of eczema, rosacea or contact allergy

Persistent reactions may require professional assessment and, in some cases, allergy testing to identify a specific trigger.

What is the best skincare routine for sensitive skin?

The best routine is one the skin tolerates and that you can follow consistently.

For many people with sensitive skin, a strong basic routine consists of:

  1. A mild facial cleanser
  2. A simple serum or facial oil when needed
  3. A fragrance-free day or night cream
  4. Sun protection during the day

Sensitive skin does not become stronger by being constantly challenged. It is better supported by stable routines, well-considered formulations and fewer unnecessary irritants.

Fragrance-free luxury skincare from SKØN SKINCARE

Luxury does not have to mean strong fragrance, excessive layering or a complicated routine.

For SKØN SKINCARE, luxury lies in the quality and balance of the formula: carefully selected raw materials, refined textures, concentrated products and the way skincare feels during and after application.

Fragrance-free skincare can still be sensorial, beautiful and pleasurable to use. The experience comes from the texture, the comfort and the feeling of giving the skin exactly what it needs—without unnecessary scent.

Begin with the essentials. Observe the skin. Add more only when there is a clear purpose.

This is our approach to sensitive skin: fewer disruptions, thoughtful formulations and a little more care.

Care a Little More.
